KATHMANDU: The main opposition Nepali Congress on Friday strongly criticized the government’s decision to reappoint Sudhan Gurung as Home Minister, questioning its commitment to good governance.
Speaking in the House of Representatives meeting, Nepali Congress lawmaker Bharat Bahadur Khadka said Gurung’s reappointment came despite serious allegations against him, including money laundering accusations and findings by the National Human Rights Commission related to the Gen Z protest controversy.
Khadka accused the government of protecting and rewarding its own members instead of ensuring accountability. He questioned why a committee formed to investigate allegations against Gurung had not made its report public before his reappointment.
“The government talks about good governance but rewards those facing serious allegations,” Khadka said, likening the administration to “both the shaman and the witch.”
He also urged parliament to remove from its records what he described as an irresponsible statement previously made by Prime Minister Balen Shah, arguing that the government’s actions undermine democratic norms and the rule of law.
