Journalist Binod Dhakal arrested

KATHMANDU: The police have arrested journalist Binod Dhakal.

The District Police Range, Kathmandu, apprehended Dhakal from the Baneshwor area on Thursday night.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Range, Dhakal was arrested on charges of committing an offense under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2007.

The arrest follows a complaint filed against Dhakal at the Area Police Office, Itahari, by Kashinath Dangol, the chairperson of the School Management Committee of Janata Secondary School in Itahari.

Dhakal is accused of issuing threats and engaging in abuse via the social media platform Facebook.

According to the police, Dhakal had threatened Dangol through status updates posted on his timeline.

Police further stated that Dhakal had been regularly publishing abusive remarks targeting several high-profile individuals, including Hemkarna Poudel, the Mayor of Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City; Dan Bahadur Karki, the Inspector General of Police; and Subas Hamal, the Deputy Superintendent of Police at the Area Police Office, Itahari.

SP Bhattarai informed that Dhakal has been sent to Sunsari for further investigation and legal action.

Dhakal is understood to be working with CanadaNepal online media.
