KATHMANDU: The Nepali Embassy in Bangkok has said it has established contact with 211 Nepali nationals currently in Cambodia while collecting details about their situation.
According to the embassy, the individuals reached out after filling out an online form launched to gather information from Nepalis living in Cambodia. Among the 211 people who submitted their details, nine are women.
The embassy stated that the Nepalis had arrived in Cambodia between May 2022 and May 2026, with many expressing a desire to return to Nepal.
Meanwhile, the embassy also revealed that 27 Nepali citizens are currently being held in various prisons in Cambodia while awaiting legal proceedings in different cases. It noted that language barriers could create challenges during court procedures, highlighting the need for legal assistance from people familiar with the local language.
The embassy further informed that 25 Nepalis are currently in the process of returning home.
Regarding travel arrangements, the embassy advised travelers to purchase tickets with connecting flights only. It warned that buying unsuitable tickets could require transit-country visas and additional baggage check-in procedures, creating unnecessary travel complications.
The embassy also reported receiving information that some Nepalis paid between NPR 200,000 and NPR 800,000 to various individuals before traveling to Cambodia.
