KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress former president Sher Bahadur Deuba has described the violent events of September 8 and 9, 2025 (Bhadra 23–24, 2082), as a “pure conspiracy.” Giving his statement to the Inquiry Commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki on the Gen-Z Incident, Deuba claimed the unrest was orchestrated, though he remained uncertain about the identity of the perpetrators.
“I did not report to the police station. This was a pure conspiracy, but I do not know who was behind it,” Deuba stated in his testimony.
“Regarding the vandalism, arson, and looting at my residence, the Nepal Police have collected the legal records (Muchulka) and details, but I am unaware of any subsequent legal action. I have not engaged in political interference or favoritism, and I disagree with the notion that political interference prevented the police from accurately assessing the situation on those days.”
Chaos at the Budhanilkantha Residence
Deuba provided a limited account of the chaos that unfolded at his private home. He recalled being at his residence on Basuki Marg, Budhanilkantha Ward No. 2, on September 8.
“That evening, I was present at Baluwatar and urged the then-Prime Minister to lift the ban on social media, which he did. However, I did not participate in any formal meetings,” he noted.
Describing the following morning, September 9, he said: “At around 10:00 AM, protesters gathered at outside my private residence. Despite security personnel’s attempts to stop them, we were physically assaulted. Interestingly, some Gen-Z youths actually stepped in to save us. We were finally moved to a secure location at around 10:00 PM (22:00) that night.”
Denial of “Hoarded Cash” claims
Addressing widespread rumors on social media regarding a massive cache of cash discovered at his home, Deuba dismissed the reports as fabrications.
“The amount of money found at my residence is mentioned in the police record (Muchulka) prepared in the presence of the Ward Chairman; it was not a large sum,” Deuba clarified. “The details circulating on social media must be AI-generated.”
