KATHMANDU: Tensions remained high in Sunsari on Tuesday as protesters set shops on fire, vandalized and looted businesses, and blocked the East-West Highway despite a curfew imposed by the local administration.
The violence was carried out by a group protesting Sunday’s fatal clash in Kaptanganj, Dewanganj Rural Municipality-3, where one person was killed and nine others injured after police opened fire to disperse two rival groups. Protesters blocked the highway at several locations by burning tires, prompting the deployment of additional police personnel.
The District Administration Office has extended prohibitory orders across Dewanganj Rural Municipality and Harinagar Rural Municipality from 7 AM to 7 PM Tuesday. Curfew remains in force in the market areas of Harinagara, Bhutaha, Kaptanganj, Ghuski, and Dewanganj as authorities seek to restore law and order.
