KATHMANDU: In a direct challenge to the government, sugarcane farmers from across Nepal commenced a protest program at Maitighar Mandala on Sunday, demanding the disbursement of a long-overdue grant.

The demonstration comes in response to the government’s decision to halve the promised subsidy from Rs. 70 to Rs. 35 per quintal, a move farmers assert is a direct violation of their agreement.

The collective action, led by the Sugarcane Producers Federation of Nepal, represents a significant portion of the nation’s farmers, particularly from the Terai-Madhesh region.

The Federation’s coordinator, Shyam Babu Rai, stated that despite sugar mills settling their dues, the government’s failure to honor its commitment has left farmers in a precarious financial position. The outstanding amount is estimated to be approximately Rs. 1.6 billion.

The four-day protest is a clear message to the administration: the farmers will not leave the capital until their demands are met.
