KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged government and all sides concerned to maintain robust peace and security and good governance. It is necessary to boost up security persons’ morale, NHRC added.

In a press statement released on Friday, NHRC Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel said government’s attention should also be focused on reconstruction of the public properties damaged in the arson and vandalism.

“NHRC urges Nepal government to create an atmosphere where no such violent activities as arson and vandalism will repeat,” Pokharel mentioned, requesting all stakeholders to extend support from their sides in rebuilding bid.

If the security persons’ morale is not boosted on time, the peace and security will be further fragile, so they must not be left disheartened. Although some communities have supported in rebuilding the police posts, it was essential to timely rebuild security posts and offices so that service delivery would be hampered for long.

The human rights watch body has further reminded the government to be serious towards management of jails and return of inmates fled from the prisons and correction centres.

“The demolition of educational institutions has impacted students’ psychology. So, it also requires adequate and proper response,” NHRC said. It informed that it has been continuously monitoring the human rights status since the Gen-Z protest of September 8 and ensuing violent activities- arson and vandalism- on September 9.

Although the initial hours of Gen-Z protest were peaceful, incidents of arson and vandalism occurred after midday, thereby resulting into severe clash with security persons. Once the firings were opened by security persons, the demonstrators lost lives, according to NHRC.

Similarly, the death of protestors on September 8 caused massive damages of public and private properties with fire and vandalism, NHRC mentioned in its monitoring report.
