Two semifinal clashes await in the ongoing T20 World Cup - New Zealand face South Africa on Wednesday, while England take on India on Thursday
On March 1, Sunday, India secured a five-wicket victory against West Indies to book a place in the T20 World Cup semifinals. After being brought back into the team following a loss to South Africa in the first Super 8 match, Sanju Samson played an unbeaten 97-run mature innings to reestablish himself, helping India win by five wickets with four balls to spare.
In the semifinal to be held in Mumbai, India will face England. Interestingly, in the last two editions of the World Cup in 2022 and 2024, whichever of these two teams won the semifinal went on to lift the trophy. In 2022, England won in Adelaide, Australia, while two years ago in Guyana, England was defeated.
However, the discussion about the tournament is not limited to that. As the venue and schedule for the semifinals remained uncertain until the last moment, some teams had to endure travel uncertainty. England, which played its Super 8 matches in co-host nation Sri Lanka, had to remain in Colombo until the result of the other group was decided. Had Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by a large margin on February 28, the equation would have changed. But after winning by only five runs, the possibility of the semifinal or final being played in Colombo ended. Nevertheless, due to the uncertainty of the match schedule, ticket sales only began from February 24.
In the second semifinal, New Zealand and South Africa will face each other. In the group stage, South Africa secured a clear victory. South Africa maintains a 100 percent success record against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup. However, considering that the context and pressure of the knockout stage are different, it would be premature to rely solely on past statistics as decisive.
India and England: Familiar rivals
In 2022, England won the World Cup title by defeating Pakistan by five wickets. Its semifinal opponent had been India. England had thrashed India by 10 wickets. The heroes were captain Jos Buttler and Alex Hales. The two had put together an unbeaten 170-run partnership.
However, in 2024 (first 2007), under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, India made a magnificent comeback by defeating England by 68 runs in the semifinal. Then, by beating South Africa in the final, India lifted the trophy in Barbados for the second time after 17 years.
The rivalry between these two teams is not limited to numerical statistics alone. It also carries emotional dimensions such as history and revenge. India and England have faced each other five times so far in the T20 World Cup, with India winning three matches and England two. However, the real thrill of these games goes beyond statistics. Every encounter has seen ups and downs, pressure, and dramatic turns.
The most unforgettable match between the two took place in the first edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007. In that game, Yuvraj Singh created a sensation in world cricket by hitting six sixes in a single over. That over was bowled by Stuart Broad. Earlier, an on-field altercation with Andrew Flintoff had made Yuvraj even more aggressive. That rare record not only boosted the popularity of T20 cricket but also elevated the India–England rivalry to a new height.
Since the last World Cup final, India has won 37 out of 48 T20 internationals played. By winning 19 out of 23 matches at home, India has demonstrated its strong foundation and consistency. Abhishek Sharma, who could not secure a place in the Indian squad for the June 2024 World Cup, has now become the world’s number one T20 batter.
In January, although he was dismissed for zero twice in five innings, he still scored a total of 182 runs. In the match against New Zealand in Guwahati on January 25, he struck a half-century in just 14 balls. Therefore, head coach Gautam Gambhir had high expectations from him in this World Cup. However, he failed to deliver a strong performance.
In the first three matches of the group stage, opener Abhishek returned to the pavilion without scoring. After missing the match against Namibia due to a stomach issue, he was expected to come back strongly in the Super 8. However, even in that match, he could not score more than 15 runs.
In the ‘do-or-die’ match against Zimbabwe, Abhishek had rescued the team with a meaningful innings of 55 runs, but he has returned to poor form. He was dismissed for just 10 runs against West Indies. However, Sanju Samson has provided India with major relief. Used as an opener against West Indies in place of the out-of-form Ishan Kishan, Sanju proved himself and completely changed the course of the game.
On the other hand, securing its semifinal spot early appears to provide India with some strategic advantage. The fact that it has had to travel across many cities throughout the tournament cannot be ignored. If it reaches the final, the match will be held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and India would already have played enough games at that venue beforehand. This could create favorable conditions for them.
South Africa and New Zealand: Second meeting in the same tournament
South Africa and New Zealand are set to face each other for the second time in the same tournament. The two teams had previously competed on February 14 under Group ‘D’. In that match, defending runners-up South Africa delivered an outstanding performance to defeat New Zealand by seven wickets. Captain Aiden Markram proved to be the hero of South Africa’s victory. He played a brilliant unbeaten innings of 86 runs off 44 balls, guiding his team to a comfortable win.
South Africa is the only team to reach the semifinals while remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. From the group stage to the Super Eight, it has delivered consistently balanced and impressive performances. Showing excellent coordination in both bowling and batting departments, South Africa is considered a strong title contender.
Meanwhile, New Zealand secured its place in the final four after a journey full of ups and downs. After losing to South Africa by seven wickets in the group stage, New Zealand also suffered a four-wicket defeat against England in the Super 8. However, as Pakistan failed to secure a large-margin victory against Sri Lanka, New Zealand advanced to the semifinals on the basis of a superior net run rate despite having equal points. This has further increased the excitement of the tournament.
Having secured a clear victory in their first meeting, South Africa will take the field with confidence, while New Zealand will prepare to compete with the goal of avenging that defeat and progressing to the final.
However, Eden Gardens will be a new venue for both teams. Known for its historic significance and large crowd capacity, there is growing curiosity about how conditions will be for teams playing there for the first time. According to Coach Rob Walter, who led South Africa to a runner-up finish in the 2024 T20 World Cup, unfamiliar conditions could be somewhat advantageous for New Zealand. He believes that although the ground is new for both sides, the team that adapts more quickly to the conditions will have a stronger chance of winning.
Both New Zealand and South Africa have achieved notable success in international cricket. Both teams have experience of lifting the World Test Championship title. Similarly, both were early champions of the Champions Trophy. However, neither has yet managed to win a white-ball (ODI or T20) World Cup.
In 2024, South Africa reached the T20 World Cup final for the first time but was defeated by India by seven runs. New Zealand, meanwhile, finished as runners-up after losing to Australia in the 2015 ODI World Cup, to England in 2019, and again to Australia in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Failing to seize the title at crucial moments has become a shared pain for both teams. “South Africa has played outstanding cricket in this World Cup so far,” Walter has said.
South Africa’s toughest test came against Afghanistan. The team had to play two Super Overs to secure the win. That match highlighted South Africa’s resilience and ability to handle pressure. Meanwhile, New Zealand comfortably defeated Afghanistan in its opening match.
The two semifinal matches will take place on March 4 and 5. The first match will be between South Africa and New Zealand, and the second between India and England. In the first semifinal, both teams will be aiming to create history, while in the second semifinal, the focus will be on preserving legacy.
