NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering starting the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier from the 2027 season to reduce matches played in extreme summer conditions.

The proposed window is around March 10 to May 15, instead of the usual late March start and late May/early June finish.

According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, the move is being discussed in view of rising heat and weather concerns during the final phase of the tournament, especially after mid-May when pre-monsoon conditions also begin in parts of India.

The players and fans have raised concerns about playing in extreme heat, particularly during evening matches.

It is also clarified that there are no immediate plans to expand IPL matches from 74 to 94, citing a packed international and domestic calendar.

If the schedule is advanced, domestic cricket in India will also need to be completed earlier to accommodate the revised IPL window.
