KATHMANDU:The Syabrubesi–Rasuwagadhi road section, a vital overland trade route connecting Nepal and China, is currently undergoing a major upgrade with financial and technical support from the Chinese government.
The reconstruction and two-lane expansion project was initiated after a massive flood in China’s Lhende River last year caused severe damage across multiple stretches of the highway.
However, with ongoing construction coinciding with the monsoon season, numerous sections of the road have turned extremely muddy. Ongoing excavation and widening works have severely disrupted the movement of freight vehicles.
In particular, large trucks and container vehicles carrying import and export goods between Nepal and China are facing immense difficulties navigating the narrow, sludge-filled passages.
Rasuwagadhi is Nepal’s busiest northern commercial border point with China. Every day, hundreds of cargo vehicles pass through this route, entering Nepal from Kerung, China, and vice-versa for exports.
Recognizing its critical economic role, the project was launched to prioritize capacity expansion and safe transit by building a modern two-lane highway.
Last year’s flash flood washed away parts of the road, collapsed retaining walls, and heightened landslide risks. Following the disaster, the Chinese government stepped in to reconstruct the damaged sections and execute a long-term upgrade for permanent safety.
Current works include widening the road corridor, erecting new retaining walls, installing culverts, and constructing landslide mitigation structures.
Once completed, the Syabrubesi–Rasuwagadhi highway will ensure smooth two-way traffic flow, significantly reduce travel time, and make freight transportation much safer and more efficient.
The upgrade is expected to ease bilateral trade, boost tourism, and streamline the supply chain via the Rasuwagadhi border point.
Nevertheless, heavy monsoon rains have partially slowed down construction progress. Due to the persistent risks of deep mud, potholes, and potential landslides, relevant authorities have urged drivers using this route to exercise extreme caution.
Preparations are underway to accelerate construction in phases to bring the road to full operational capacity as soon as possible.
