JANAKPUR: Four political parties have decided to continue the current Madhesh Province government led by the Nepali Congress.

A meeting of coalition leaders held on Sunday, attended by Nepali Congress leader Krishna Prasad Yadav, Nepali Communist Party (NCP) parliamentary leader Yubaraj Bhattarai, Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal parliamentary leader Saroj Kumar Yadav, and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party leader Jayanul Rain, took the decision, according to a joint statement.

The statement said the meeting decided to continue the government under Chief Minister Krishna Prasad Yadav and seek a vote of confidence at the earliest.

NCP parliamentary leader Bhattarai said the decision was made to ensure continuity in budget implementation and prevent disruption in development works, especially at a time when a new budget cycle is approaching.

The decision comes after the Janamat Party withdrew its support from the government.

Chief Minister Yadav must secure a vote of confidence within 30 days. Janamat withdrew its support on May 4.

In the current coalition, the Nepali Congress holds 22 seats, the JSP 17, the NCP 15, and the LSP 8 seats in the provincial assembly.

A majority requires 54 votes, while the government currently claims support of 62 assembly members.
